We are a group of local parents who meet regularly to introduce and encourage children to take part in   outdoors sports and activities. We provide the opportunity for children to have free play and activities with sports toys and equipment. we also organize basketball, football games, sack races and hops activities as well as racing and soft games for the younger ones. Both indoors and outdoors.

The project was started   by a parent called Agueda Furtado. It was called parents for sports because the main aim were to get parents and young children to take part in physical activities.   Agueda started this project because she was a parent of a 2-year-old girl who realized that there was not much available at weekends (in terms of physical activities)   for children aged 2-6.   Agueda who was always a very active person   used to take part in inter-school sports competition (football, basketball and volleyball) and worked with children and families.
Agueda had support from her university/junction49 and the Kelloggs community funding to turn  this project a reality. http://www.junction49.co.uk/idea/1565/parents_for_sports/

Given the apparent gap on what were on offer for this age group she felt that it was very important to create a   project that would cater for them as she believes that it was crucial that children were physically active. The project initially focused on outdoor activities which were organized every weekend at regent's park, but it was adapted to include indoor sessions at the local community sports center during the cold weather periods.

Parents for sports choose a Saturday for its activities because   there is not much available for parents to do with their   kids on a weekend and most available activities   charge a fee for parents to take   part or join.

Parent for sports believed that   by practicing sports children would; Meet others in the community,   develop their health, be interested in sports and outdoors activities, develop self -esteem and team work from a young age and most importantly interact with parents and other children.

Parents for sports catered mostly for parents and carers with children age 2 to 6 but it the projects success we started to cater for older children and young people.

Parents for sports sessions are run by voluntaries with play, sports and childcare qualifications.

All parents and carers taking part in the activities have to stay with their child and take responsibility for them at all times. A parent for sports   operates as a drop in, so parent’s collaboration is essential.

The activities tae place mostly in Harrington Square Gardens and Amptill Square playground during summer/spring time and moves indoors to Somers Town Community center during colder periods.   Please check our events page for full details of upcoming events and remember to leave feedback on our guest   section.
